Jade
Dewi Tyas Tunggal is a freelance dance artist from Angourie, NSW. She has
studied at the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (1990-95), receiving
an Australian Students Prize and 2 Premier's Certificates for Excellence in
the HSC (for gaining first place in both Dance and Classical Ballet courses);
Queensland University of Technology ~ Academy of the Arts (1996); and on a
full scholarship at the New World School of the Arts at the University of
Florida (1997-99), receiving a BFA in dance (Honours graduate).
Whilst in the USA Jade Dewi participated and performed at the
Bates Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, Florida Dance Festival and
Jacobs Pillow. She was a member of Gerri Houlihan's, Houlihan & Dancers Company
for 2 years and also toured to Kaohsiung, Taiwan with a company of dancers
from the New World School of the Arts. During her professional dance experience
in the USA Jade Dewi worked with and performed the dances of a number of notable
choreographers, including Sophie Maslow, Bebe Miller, Ana Vitoria, Gerri Houlihan,
Kathleen Hermmensdorf, Sandra Kaufman, Ronald K Brown and Doug Varone. She
also expressed her voice through 'free public art' performances with Bread
& Puppet, and Art & Revolution.
Since returning to Australia she has performed in works directed by choreographers, Bernadette Warlong, Michael Hennessey, Jason Pitt, Beren Molony, Vivienne Rogis and Elizabeth Cameron Dalman. Before returning to Mirramu for the 2002 Weereewa Festival, Jade Dewi was in New Zealand for two months. During that time she created dances, performed at the Cuba Street Carnival, the International Dragon Boat Festival, the NZ International Arts Festival and won two Wellington Fringe Festival Awards with the BodyCartography Project.
